Although her primary theatrical career is as a director and producer, Cara also has a background in and passion for creative writing.

As a high-schooler, Cara received numerous awards for her poetry and fiction.  Her children’s book A Stone Promise, won the 1991 “National Written and Illustrated By…” competition for students, and was subsequently published by Landmark Editions.  She also won the National Department of the Interior’s 1992 “Holocaust Memorial Writing Competition” and received honorable mention for her poetry from the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts.  Due in large part to her writing accomplishments, she was selected as one of 20 members of the prestigious USA Today “All-Academic Team,” as a 1992 Presidential Scholar, was sponsored by author Jean M. Auel to attend the American Academy of Achievement’s 1992 annual honors weekend, and participated in the 1993 International Scholar-Athlete Games.

Cara went on to study poetry and fiction in the Creative Writing program at Princeton University with professors such as Toni Morrison, James Richardson, Mary Morris, Peter Carey, J.D. McClatchy, and others.  While at Princeton, she took part in the first Atelier, with author A. S. Byatt and choreographer Jacques D’Amboise, continued to write short stories and poetry, and completed a creative thesis.

In her post-college career, Cara’s creative energies have been focused on collaborating to create new musical theater, working primarily as a co-adaptor and co-librettist.  She shares original book-writing credits with Peter Mills on the musicals The Flood, The Alchemists, The Pursuit of Persephone, Honor, and Evergreen.  She is a co-adaptor of the book on Illyria, Golden Boy of the Blue Ridge, and The Rockae.   Upcoming writing collaborations include the original musical  Nocturne.
